Republicans may soon learn what "being targeted by the media" really means

While Republicans love to falsely claim that they are "targeted" by the media, the reality is that they are routinely given the soft glove treatment. Media pundits engage in an endless stream of false equivalencies, pretending that Democratic setbacks are just as bad as Republican scandals (see the treatment of Biden's misplacement of classified docs versus Trump likely selling national defense information to Russia and the Saudis for an example of that) and fail to expose the constant stream of disinformation coming from the GOP. The election of serial liar George Santos and neo-Bircher right-wing extremist Brandon Williams in New York are both examples of how the GOP benefits from the media constantly sitting on their hands when it comes to political news coverage. That situation may be about to come to an end. The fact is that large media outlets are all parts of major corporations that benefit greatly from GOP promises of tax breaks. Now that House Republicans have begun discussing a bill to "prioritize federal spending" after driving the United States into a debt default, large media corporations have no incentive to support a party whose acts of economic terrorism are likely to lead to a nationwide recession and a huge drop in advertising revenues.

Two examples of the media pushing back came on the morning News Shows of January 15th of 2023. On that morning Chuck Todd asked GOP conspiracy theorist and Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson why he was so concerned about Hunter Biden's laptop, but so unconcerned about Jared Kushner being the beneficiary of a $2 Billion investment from the Saudis. Johnson sputtered in response and claimed that Todd "only invited him on to argue," in response. Over on CNN, Republican House Rep James Comer struggled to explain why Biden's misplacement of documents was a national security crisis, but the prospect of Trump offering national security information to Russia in exchange for financial favors to the Trump Organization was nothing to be concerned about. This kind of pushback from media pundits should be just the tip of the iceberg as the Republican Party's attempts to diminish the financial and political authority of the United States Government leads to actions that could do severe financial harm to America's large media companies.
